Since 2001, it has staged highly important exhibitions by renowned artists such as Louise Bourgeois, Yayoi Kusama, Sebastião Salgado, Salvador Dalí and Joan Miró, to mention a few. Tomie Ohtake was born on 21 November 1913, in Kyoto, Japan. But it was in Brazil – where she established herself after the Pacific War broke out – that her career took off in the 1950s. Over the course of her many years working as an artist, she was featured in 20 International Biennales, had more than 120 solo exhibitions staged worldwide, took part in almost 400 collective shows in Brazil and abroad, and won 28 awards.
